Bernardo signs huge new Man City deal: “There’s nowhere I’d rather be”

Portugal international Bernardo Silva has signed a new six-year contract with English Premier League champions Manchester City.

Reports had indicated that City were prepared to double Bernardo’s wages to over €200,000 per week in order to tie the midfielder down. Spanish duo Barcelona and Real Madrid were believed to have been keeping tabs on Bernardo, but the new deal should see the former Benfica man spend his prime years in Manchester

“It’s an honour to extend my deal with Manchester City,” Bernardo said. “This club offers everything a player needs to fulfil their ambitions and there’s nowhere else I want to be.

“As soon as I heard City wanted me to stay longer, my mind was made up. I love the Club, the manager, the players and the fans.

“The style of football we play here excites me, and I am determined to win more trophies. City gives me the best chance of doing that.”

"Easy decision"

The 24-year-old has become a huge fan favourite since arriving at the Etihad Stadium in 2017 after playing a starring role in Monaco's French title winning season, during which they knocked City out of the Champions League. Pep Guardiola recently admitted that he “loves” the Portuguese, and City Director of Football Txiki Begiristain admitted during the announcement that it was a simple choice to commit to Bernardo.

“Bernardo is an exceptional talent, so offering him a new deal and ensuring he spends the best years of his career with us was a very easy decision.

“This is the latest example of our commitment to building a young squad of world-class players. We are constructing a side that will provide a platform for sustained success. Bernardo fits neatly into our plan.”

Bernardo has won the Premier League and two League Cups in England, as his team currently chase an unprecedented quadruple of trophies.
